BACK ISSUES EDITORIAL Welcome to the 4th issue of the newsletter. Not as much new news, now that the Shizuoka Hobby Show is over. Posters from the major manufacturers, that were seen at the show, are now available online for all to see. You can see the latest Kato one here, and the latest Tomix ones here (click on the 'page's marked 2004 in the 'newsstand'). MicroAce's 2004 posters are at this page, but you can see a larger version of the latest one here. If you have any comments about this service, and would like to make suggestions as to what you do or do not want to see included, please free free to let us know. If you are paying for something, we would like to know that you are 100% happy with what you are getting, and that it is fulfilling your needs. Please write to this address with any comments you may have. This newsletter is available by subscription, unless you are a recent customer of 'Japanese Model Supplies'. Modemo - will release 'normal' coloured versions of the 1500 series 2 car articulated set in 'summer 2004'.

Jul 2004 - UF15A 'Pelican' Greenmax - were showing samples of their Keikyu New1000 series cars, as well as a new low profile power chassis. Tomix - had posters and samples showing their planned future releases, including ... o 100 series TEC 'Sayonara 100' One big announcement is the commencement of a 'The Car Collection' series, similar to the popular 'The Bus Collection', which is now into the 4th series. It will be good to have some decent Japanese vehicles to put on a layout Projected figures, at 12 cars per carton, is 8 different series to be released !!! Two EF65's and one EF81 were painted in this colour scheme to be used with the 'Super Express Rainbow' Joyful train. This is actually a re-release from Kato - previous second hand models were selling for a ridiculously high price. It is the same as the other recent EF65 models with the separate front handrails. The body is bright red, with a black roof, a white stripe along the bottom of the body and large 'EF65' lettering on the side in white. The painting is nice and crisp, with the white lettering very solid (better than Kato's Rainbow EF81). It has flywheels, and runs very smoothly. There are the usual number of fiddly parts to attach to the roof. The head lights are very yellow and are reasonably bright at low speed. It only comes with one number '1019' which is correct for this loco, but there is a blank number board if you want to be a deviant. There is another EF65in the same livery, but that one has scissors pantographs and other minor detail differences. It is made in Japan, and a welcome addition back to the Kato family. Another item in the Tokyu Setagaya line 300 series cars. This is car #2, and is silver with light blue panels (most of the cars after this one are all a solid colour). It also has an extra item on one end of the roof, like green #1. No advertising stickers for this particular version. It runs nice and smoothly and quietly. There are a number of small parts to add to the roof, and a sheet of destination signs is provided. All you have to do is to paint the mechanism black, to hide it from view through the large side windows. The model is made in China. I wonder how many more Modemo will do in this series ??? This
set contains ... The new 'Y' point is a very welcome addition to the Tomix 'Finetrack' range, as this is a very common item of track geometry in Japan. Using the 541mm curve gives you the right distance for a center platform. You can also use the 280mm curve for the proper double track spacing, The 2 point motors can be hooked up to the one controller using the 'reversing' cable, which swaps the polarity of one of the motors so that it goes the opposite way (so that the loop track is selected for either one side or the other). There is a large range of both dummy electric point motors and switch stands to choose from. These can also be used as a 'spring' switch, which is also quite common in Japan. However, you still need them to be hooked up to the power so that they return to one side. The points are of course electrically route selective. The 'Y' point is available separately as well. After the
double slip, this addition to the range (and others later this year)
certainly put Tomix way out in front of it's only competitor -
Kato's Unitrack !!! May 2004
This month the featured item is the popular Tomix 6421 Track Cleaning Car - better and more properly known as the 'multi rail cleaning car'. This is the original version with a dark blue body and yellow stripe. The car has four basic functions - it can sweep the track, do vacuuming, clean the rails with a wet solvent on a soft spinning disk, or use an abrasive disk to clean the track. It comes with the vacuum disk fitted, and has three spare wet and three dry disks, as well as the sweeper brush. The car is designed to run off the track power and needs to be pulled/pushed by a locomotive. Cleaning power can also be provided by a plug-in Tomix rail power connector, and the track power can be switched from 'normal' to 'CL' (which uses the Tomix 'Constant Lighting' circuit to provide a faster cleaning action at low movement speeds).
