BACK ISSUES EDITORIAL A couple of really nice arrivals this week, that you can read about in the Product Reviews column. The re-release of the Kato Super Azusa has been eagerly awaited, having been out of stock for several years. Most news items will stay on the newsletter for about two issues before they are deleted. We did this so you can catch up on the news and not miss an item just in case you don't read one issue. Is it better to let the items 'hang about' for a little while, or to have each issue completely full of new items ??? What do you think, dear reader ??? If you have any comments about this service, and would like to make suggestions as to what you do or do not want to see included, please free free to let us know. If you are paying for something, we would like to know that you are 100% happy with what you are getting, and that it is fulfilling your needs. Please write to this address with any comments you may have. This newsletter is available by subscription, unless you are a recent customer of 'Japanese Model Supplies'. 29th May 2004 In what has been a closely guarded secret for quite a while, Railcraft Awaza have announced their first original release - the Kintetsu 30000 series EC 4 car set 'Vista EX' conversion kit. It is designed to be based on the Tomix 30000 series 'Vistacar' set. Tetsudo no Tabi 03/2004 Well it's not the latest issue out, but it was when I bought it in Tokyo, and now it has just arrived courtesy of Seamail !!! The title translates to something like 'Traveling by Train', and features places you can visit by train, and what to see, what to eat and where to stay when you get there. This issue is similar to the June Railfan, in that is has a comparison between Tokyo's Yamanote line, and the Osaka Loop line. While only a small publication (36pp for ¥560), it does have lots of nice colour photos of both the trains and the surrounding urban scenery, as well as a large bird's eye view drawing of each of the loops, showing all the major features, as well as the other connecting lines. Azusa'
A very eagerly awaited re-release from Kato !!! This is a fabulous looking train, and it tilts on the curves, just like the prototype. The 'Super Azusa' service started in 1993, and runs out of Shinjuku, on the Chuo line, to Matsumoto, and then splits to Minami-Otari or Hakuba. The car bodies are white and mauve, with light gray underbody details, and a bluish gray roof and details. The cars have single arm pantographs, mounted on a special platform that does not tilt with the car body (doesn't do this on the model). The car numbers, lettering etc is clear, crisp and readable. The cars come with Kato's non-working Scharfenberg couplers, but unfortunately the wheels are still shiny silver :-( A minimal sticker sheet of destination signs is included, and there are a number of fiddly roof parts to attach. The coloured LED panel on the lead cars is impressive, and the reversing head/tail lights are reasonably bright at low speed. The inside end car of the addon set does not have any lights at all. The powered car runs with the usual Kato smoothness. The set, as far as I can see, has not been changed since the original release, and is made in Japan. Another fabulous release from MicroAce !!! The double-deck car in this set is especially interesting and attractive, with the parade of tradition figures along the side. Here is a close up to give you a better look. It is different on each side, and very crisply printed for figures that are around 2mm high !!! Whilst the procession is printed a little too low on the car side, and there is some lettering missing, the overall appearance is very impressive. The Keihan's main line runs from Osaka to Kyoto and around Lake Biwako, and it's attractive two-tone green rolling stock gives you an alternative to JR. This type of express service train however, is painted red and orange and has a dark gray roof, with light gray details, and dark gray underfloor details. The car interiors range from yellow to pink to purple, all with white headrests. One car has two TV aerials on the roof, even though I see no N scale TV screens inside :-) The reversing head/tails lights aren't really very bright at low speed but the cars do have blackened wheels. Provision for Tomix interior lighting and body mounted TN couplers (use the gray model 372) are provided. However the Rapido couplers on these cars are so close together, you nearly don't need to replace them with TN's !!! A very impressive release, and it is made in China.

This month the featured item is the popular Tomix 6421 Track Cleaning Car - better and more properly known as the 'multi rail cleaning car'. This is the original version with a dark blue body and yellow stripe. The car has four basic functions - it can sweep the track, do vacuuming, clean the rails with a wet solvent on a soft spinning disk, or use an abrasive disk to clean the track. It comes with the vacuum disk fitted, and has three spare wet and three dry disks, as well as the sweeper brush. The car is designed to run off the track power and needs to be pulled/pushed by a locomotive. Cleaning power can also be provided by a plug-in Tomix rail power connector, and the track power can be switched from 'normal' to 'CL' (which uses the Tomix 'Constant Lighting' circuit to provide a faster cleaning action at low movement speeds).
