BACK ISSUES EDITORIAL Lots of release news and also new releases this time, some of the reviews will have to wait until next issue - the main one to look out for is the review of the new Tomix E231-500 Yamanote line train, and a comparison with the Kato version. This train only commenced service earlier this year. There will be a limited edition 6 car set, as well as the usual 3 car set in a cardboard box and a 3 car addon in the usual hard plastic case. It will be the first item after the recent DD51 DL to have a flywheel drive, and there will also be a new coupling mechanism, that will allow car end detail. The interior seat molding will be detachable, so you can swap them to match the direction of travel !!! The car numbers of the full set and other two will be different. Because the cars are a lot smaller than the previous items in 'The Bus Collection', Tomy are packing 3 cars per box. These 3 will all be the same type of car. A carton will hold 12 boxes
i.e. 36 cars. Enoshima - Natsukashi no Densha Meikan
Another item in our continuing fascination with the Enoden !!! This is a volume 53 in the JTB 'Can Books' series of railway related books. The title translates roughly to 'Enoshima - Nostalgic train directory'. It is A5 size and has 180 pages, about half of them in colour. There are enough photos, graphs, maps etc to make it worthwhile even if you cannot read a word of Japanese !!! The plans and line drawings of each car type are useful, as well as the section showing the many colourful advertising schemes applied regularly to the rolling stock fleet. Also of interest is the chapter showing the various designs put forward before the 10 series shape and livery was chosen. It was printed in 2003, so does include the latest 20 series. A good mixture of old and new photos, with lots of other useful data as well. Price is ¥1,800. Tomix 92929 100 series TEC 16 car set 'Sayonara100'
This is a limited edition release to commemorate the lat run of a 100 series 'G' set on the 16th September 2003. The full 16 car train comes in 3 hard cases (5 + 6 + 5) inside a nicely decorated cardboard sleeve, and all the cars are the correct type and number for this day's train. This is NOT just a re-release of the existing cars in a set - Tomix have retooled 3 NEW cars, and also the roof detail of most other cars. The gray underbodies are a darker colour, and all cars have a lot of printing, like the JR logo, car numbers, non-smoking signs, set numbers on the cab windscreens etc. None of this was on the original releases. The end cars and one of the double decker cars also has a special 'Last run' logo printed on it, and also on the nose cones. The two new 125 type cars are also the powered cars, so you have 2 powered cars each side of the double deck Green cars. The pantograph shroud set is included and a full colour booklet is also included with this magnificent set. one of MicroAce's most expensive releases so far, you can see
why.This has to be the most colourful and also finely painted model
train I have ever seen. I don't know how they can do it !!! Certainly a head turner when I ran it at the last exhibition !!!

This month, the featured model is the fabulously colourful Kato 'Rainbow Express'. This is a JR East 'Joyful' train, that ran from 1987 to 2000. The cars start at the ends with red stripes on the white body, and gradually increase the amount of red to a full red lounge car in the middle. While you may wonder how just red and white make up a rainbow, it is the interiors of the cars that probably give it it's name, with each car having a different interior colour. There were 3 locos painted to go with the train, the two above and another EF65. They are all bright red with large white class numbers on the sides. You can have a choice of either the EF65 or EF81 loco, while stocks of both last. Special price for this month will be A$255.00.
