BACK ISSUES EDITORIAL Sorry about the delay getting out this edition. Last weekend I received a new computer, and it has taken a while to set it up and transfer all the files I needed from the old one. If you have any comments about this service, and would like to make suggestions as to what you do or do not want to see included, please free free to let us know. *** Late breaking news *** A very powerful earthquake shook the Niigata area at around 6pm Saturday night. Fortunately death & injury rates are low, but it has also caused the derailment of a Bullet train. No-one on the train was injured, but it is worth mentioning that this is the first time since the inauguration of the Tokaido Shinkansen in 1964 that there has been a derailment - compare that to any other country's railway safety record !!!
This is a 10 car JR East 200 series Shinkansen (refurbished type). 23rd October 2004 Noticed in the new Tomix catalog, that the following sets have been marked as 'stop production'. This means they will never been made again, so if you want to get any of these sets, and see them anywhere, NOW is the time to buy !!! 92751 700-7000 TEC 'Railstar' 8 car set 22nd October 2004 Tomix - due out on the 23rd are ... 1322 15deg RH diamond crossing Due on the 28th is the 92082 500 Shinkansen basic 3 car set. Due on the 30th are ... 2773 Shiki1000 freight car Slated for release in November are the 800 Kyushu Shinkansen sets, the E2-0 Shinkansen set and Kilopost #73. 20th October 2004 Kato - On the 26th October, they will re-release the following ... 8029 Wamu90000 2 car freight set On the 29th October, the 10-489 'Takara' container train set will be released. The extra wagon sets to go with this have been pushed back to a December release. Now listed for release in 'early' November are ... 8016 Hoki220 freight car Other releases due in November are the 683 Thunderbird sets, 651 Super Hitachi sets, 800 Kyushu Shinkansen, 185 Odoriko sets in the new colour, some 20 series diesel cars and a large range of Diotown buildings and accessories. 7th October 2004 Greenmax - interesting to note the the power chassis used in the new Keikyu 1000 series set has two motors, one powering each bogie !!! Hopefully this will be the same in all the items in their new 'low profile' power chassis series. They are also releasing their own range of train cases - 4 car cases to suit 18, 20 or 21m vehicles. There is also a new catalogue (#14) planned, but no release date yet from Greenmax. Modemo - have announced a release of the Hakone Tozan Moha2 series cars, and this will be the first Modemo 'tram' model to have head/tail lights. Surprisingly, nothing from MicroAce except for samples of some of the new models. However it is noted that the new versions of the EH10 EL will have a motor in each carbody, driving directly on all wheels. Kawai have announced a new series of 4 wheeler freight cars ... KP-212 Wafu25000 series van 2 car set Tomix - in February, they will release 14.15 type passenger sets for the 'Akatsuki' and 'Suisei' sleeper trains, which will include the Oha14-300 'Legato Seat' car. In November, they will release 2 new 4 different colour light signals, as well as making plans for 2, 3 & 6 light versions as well. The powered units in the Kiha16/17 series will have a flywheel drive. I think this is a first from Tomix for a DMU car !!! Posters were displayed showing the 2nd series in 'The Car Collection', which this time will be 1980's type cars including a Celica, Mark II, Cedric & Skyline.
Samples from Machinami series 3 were on display, this time being a range of small shops like in series 1. This time we have a teahouse, greengrocer, bakery, Bar, sushi shop & candy store.
'The Bus' Collection' series 5 was shown, and this time will be the Isuzu BU04 & the NSK typeB nonstep 96MC, due out in winter. 'Collection' #6 was also hinted at, with the Hino RJ172 & Fuji I5E due out next spring.
From the Thomas the Tank Engine series, 'Percy' is now due out March 2005. Due out on the 9th is the 2768 Koki106 container wagon and the 485 EC & EF65 Blue Train 3 car sets. Kato - showed a new range of their city Diotown buildings, this time in an alternate colour scheme ...
23-408B City shop / convenience store x2 (Blue) As well as the above, they also have now listed for a November release, some of the Diotown accessories ... 23-417 Dio-town - Accessories for station front area New models listed for future release are a later version of the EF58 EL, the Osaka area 207-2000 series EC (already done by Tomix), the JNR Kiha82 DC, the Hachiko line refurbished 205 series EC, the JR Kyushu 787 series EC 'Relay Tsubame', more entries in the old time passenger car range, the 485 series 'bonnet' type EC (already done by Tomix), and the Aichi area 2000 series EC. They also showed some new components in the double track Unitrak range. The new catalogue will be out on November, and is 324
pages (up from 260pp), but the price has also risen over 40% !!! On the 21st Ocotber, Kato re-released the E351 series EC 'Super Azusa' 8 car set, and Tomix re-released the DD51 DL in 'Euroliner' livery. On the 19th October, Kato re-released the EF81 & Cassiopiea passenger sets. On the 15th October, MicroAce released ... A0932 203-0 series EC 6 car set - JNR (Joban Line/Chiyoda Subway) On the 14th October, MicroAce released ... A0940 ED76-20 series EL On the 1st October, the Tomix E1 series TEC sets were released in the new colour scheme, as well as the newly-packaged 700-7000 series TEC 'Railstar' sets. |

This month, the feature article is Part 1 of a series relating to electric JR Express trains, and highlights all those currently running with details of their destinations, train times & types distances etc. Of interest is a table showing all expresses running during one 24 hour period. Also included are some private line services as well, Nagasaki trams and an article on Imperial use steam locos.
Tomix 92273 E1 TEC new colour 3 car set
The JR East's 6x E1 MAX sets began to be repainted in a new colour scheme earlier this year, and of course Tomix are right on top of the latest prototypes !!! There is no real differences between these and the previous models, except this is the first release from Tomix to have the roof anti-skid panels painted gray. They didn't bother to upgrade these new sets with blacked wheels either, which is a minus. The cars are a dark blue with white top and a wide pink stripe between, and the new 'MAX' logo is printed on several cars. The main set is in the usual 3 car cardboard box, but both addon sets come with the hard plastic case, so all 12 cars will fit in two cases. Because one of the addon sets also has a power car, you end up to 2 powered cars, which is really not necessary for a 12 car train. The seat interiors are different colours appropriate to the particular car type, and range from yellow, blue, pink to aqua. Small insulators need to be added to the roof, and there is a sheet of car numbers to be applied. The two power cars run smoothly and quietly, however do not match speeds until quite high voltages. If you want to keep up with the latest from JR East, this is a very nice looking train to run.
Many people have complained about the 'Model of the Month' competition - not about the concept itself, but because the item has already been sold out by the time they place their order. We try to predict in advance how many items to order, but it is often only a guess. Of course, we always say that early reservations avoid disappointment, however to make things easier, we have decided to announce in advance what the next couple of month's items will be, so you can plan ahead. The actual price will not be determined in advance, but will be worked out based on the number of pre-orders at the beginning of the month - of course the more orders taken, the lower the price !!! Roundhouse 10-914 20 series PC 'Holiday Pal' 8 car set This month's Model of the Month is the 'Joyful' passenger train set, 'Holiday Pal'. This is a Kato model, repainted and marketed by Kato Hobby Center Tokyo, under their 'Roundhouse' brand name. The train started being used by JR West in 1984, and was painted in this livery from 1990 to it's end in 1995. Special price for this month will be A$230.00.
