BACK ISSUES EDITORIAL Kato have announced a range of items for release next year, and the race is hotting up to see who will release their 800 series Kyushu Shinkansen first this month - Kato or Tomix !!! If you have any comments about this service, and would like to make suggestions as to what you do or do not want to see included, please free free to let us know. If you are paying for something, we would like to know that you are 100% happy with what you are getting, and that it is fulfilling your needs. Please write to this address with any comments you may have. This newsletter is available by subscription, unless you are a recent customer of 'Japanese Model Supplies'. Normal rate is US$2.50 per month, payable 12 months at a time in advance. The 12 month subscription period will be from June to May inclusive. We hope to supply at least one issue per week, more if there is more news. We believe this amount is good value, and very modest for the amount of information you will receive - it represents (per month) less than 1 coffee at a 'trendy' cafe (eg Starbucks), or a burger & fries at a family restaurant (eg McDonalds). See the Kato release information page for full details 30th October 2004 2 new 4 colour light signals will be released in 2005, and will work as follows. 5561 is (from top to bottom) yellow / red / yellow / green and will have 2 modes - 1/ red - yellow(3) - yellow(1)+green - green, and 2/ red - yellow(3) - yellow(1)+green - yellow(1)+green (flashing) - green. 5562 is (from top to bottom) yellow / red / green / yellow and will work as follows... red - yellow(1)+yellow(4) - yellow(4) - green. Like the recent 5 colour one, the length of time between the colours changing will be determined automatically by the size of your layout, and they can be used in a 'starter' mode. Their first releases will be JR Hokkaido prototypes (saves having to worry about running with overhead electric wires). There will be colour variations of the Kiha183 diesel sets and the Kiha40 diesel cars. if you are interested in these items, please write directly, as HO items are not listed on these pages 28th October 2004 MicroAce have announced their intention to enter the HO scale market !!! Their first release will be sometime in early 2005 and will be JR Hokkaido items, starting with variations of the Kiha40 DC cars and also the Kiha183 DC sets. If you are interested in these items, please mail directly - as there is very little HO sold, details will not be put in this Newsletter. 26th October 2004 Tomix have shown samples of their 2 new passenger car sets, due in February 2005. The 4 car 'Suisei' set will have one new car tooling, the Ohane15-350 'Solo' car with full side double deck rooms. The 7 car 'Akatsuki' set will have 3 new car toolings, the Ohane14-300 'Single/Twin' car, Orone14-300 'Single DX' car, and the Oha14-300 'Legato Seat' car. These two sets run together from Kyoto with an EF66, an EF81-300 in the tunnel between Honshu and Kyushu, and then ED76's take over from Moji, where the Akatsuki runs to Nagasaki and the Suisei runs to Minami-Miyazaki. 25th October 2004 MicroAce will release in December 2004 two new electric locos - the EF62 (Japan's only C-C loco) in both the brown and blue colour schemes. These were mainly used for passenger services on the Joetsu line. This month, the topic is 'Hokkaido, it's Rail Network and Intercity Traffic', so of course this is the basis of most of the articles, including the Sapporo subway lines, Rumoi & Hakodate lines, and rides on the Limited Expresses Super Hokuto and Super Soya. Tomy 'The Car Collection' #1
From top to bottom, the 4 models are the 1963 Prince Gloria Super 6, 1960 Toyota Corona, 1959 Datsun Bluebird & 1960 Nissan Cedric. I am sure early Japanese models like these appeared in small numbers in most western countries around that era. A carton contains 12 boxes, each of which contains 3 different cars. Each box will have the same model in it, with the first two of the basic colour, plus one other being either the third basic colour or one of the variants. The contents of each box is not visible (a bit like trading cards/collectibles) until you buy it (unless you have an obliging retailer). Buying a whole carton will give you the full range, plus several duplicates of course. The 'secret' selection this time is a Super 6 in black with white roof, and Super 6 & Cedric 'Nippon Kotsu' taxies in red/yellow. Tomy claim they will do 8-9 different series of these in total, including up to the modern era. The detail on these models are quite exquisite, even down to the chrome lettering on the car sides !!! Even though you do not see many older cars in Japan now, these vehicles would be very nice on an older period layout. The quality is better and the price lower then the cars in the Tomix range !!!

92935 800 series TEC 6 car set 'Tsubame' (JR Kyushu) This month's Model of the Month is the Tomix version of the newest Japanese bullet train - the Kyushu 800 series, that started running in March this year.
