15th December 2004 Bandai announced the 2nd in their 'Working Vehicle' series - a set of tank trucks to be released in January 2005. Once again, there will be 10 different colour schemes, and a secret one. MicroAce announced their releases for May 2005 ... JNR 165 series EC 8 & 4 car sets 'Alps' Kato announced the following release dates ... 22nd December - M250 Super Rail Cargo sets Changed to a January 2005 release were the Diotown road and park sets and the'Takara' addon container wagon sets. 10th December 2004 Greenmax announced their new 262pp catalog (#14), due out December/January. 8th December 2004 Kato announced their releases for March 2005. They include ... 205 series EC 7 car set (Yamanote line) and extra cars 7th December 2004 Greenmax announced the 3 Kintetsu 22000 series 'ACE' sets, for release February 2005. 4th December 2004 Modemo have announced another version of the Toden 7000 series tram, for release in January. 3rd December 2004 On the 10th December, Tomix will release the following ... 92268 E2-100 series TEC 3 car set 'Hayate' A new release for April 2005 is the Niigata area 115-1000 3 car set in the new colour scheme. 2nd December 2004 Many changes to Kato's release schedule. The 683 Thunderbird will finally be out on the 3rd. The new EF65 + passenger car set will be early December, and in mid December will be the new Catalog, EF58-60, 185 Odoriko. Late December will bring the new Diotown accessory sets, Takara addon sets, M250 Super Rail Cargo trains, just in time for Xmas !!! Next January will be the re-release of the Kiha20 DC & 10 series PC, as well as the 700 series TEC (which will have the 'Ambitious Japan' logos). February will bring the re-release of the 103 cars in orange and yellow, and the new EF81 & 787 'Relay Tsubame'.
16th December 2004 MicroAce released the JNR EF62 EL's and the DF90 DL's. Tomix released the Notoji line Kiha58 DC set. Kato finally released their new catalog. Greenmax released the 4 car 107-100 EC set. 15th December 2004 MicroAce released the Tobu DRC 1700/1720 EC sets, Keisei AE-1 EC 'Skyliner' sets, and the JNR D60 ballast train set. Platz released two UF25A container sets, lettered for the 'Eastern Matsuura Agricultural Co-op'. Kato re-released the E351 series EC 'Super Azusa' set. 14th December 2004 Kato released the 185 series EC sets in the new colour scheme, and the EF65-1000 passenger set. 10th December 2004 Tomix released the E2-100 series TEC 'Hayate' sets and the high Grade 485-200 series EC cars & sets, and re-released the E231 Joban line 3 car set. 3rd December 2004 Kato's version of the 800 series Kyushu Shinkansen was released, as well as the 683 series 'Thunderbird' sets. Comparison of Kato & Tomix 800 series Kyushu Shinkansen sets (full review of the Tomix set is in Newsletter #26) After a brief look at these two sets, I conclude that it would be hard to tell them apart running on a layout, unless you looked at the inter-car connection method. Unlike previous Kato/Tomix models, where there have been marked differences between the two e.g. the E1 Shinkansen, visually they are pretty much identical, except the the red colour on the car roof is a slightly different shade. The main differences are small (literally) - I think the printing on the Tomix model is a lot better. The printing in a lot of places on the Kato model is messy and not crisp at all. Because JR Kyushu like to cover their trains all over with logos and other lettering, this is a significant difference. Of course a lot of the lettering is so small you need a magnifying glass to read it, but that is when you notice the difference - however even some of the larger ones are not as good as they should be - you can see the blurry edges with the naked eye. Another not very noticeable difference is that the Tomix model has greenish coloured window glass, whereas the Kato is a smoky gray. A trivial difference is that you can turn the seats around inside the Tomix model !!! Operationally, they are pretty comparable too, however the Kato model does start at slightly lower voltages. Once the Tomix starts running however, it can still run just as slow. The lights have differences, with the Tomix taillights being a lot brighter, and staying brighter at lower voltages. The headlights are both using blue LED's are are pretty much the same, although the Kato does look a little brighter at higher voltages. The Kato model is just presented in the standard green storage case, whereas the Tomix looks a lot smarter in a box with a specially printed white sleeve. One last thing - the Tomix set is made in China, whereas the Kato is made in Japan, and is ¥2,000 cheaper. But in this case, I think that the extra price is justified. It just goes to show that just because an item is now made in China, it does not have to be an inferior product to one still made in Japan.

The major topic this issue is 'Comparison of Suburban Transit in Tokyo and Osaka Metropolitan Areas'. Firstly, the JR East 'Shonan Shinjuku' line is examined, with the increased service since the October 2004 timetable revision and the introduction of double deck E231 Green cars as major changes. Compared to that is the Kyoto-Osaka-Kobe 'Shin-Kaisoku' service from JR West's 'Urban Network'. The role of the E231 in JR East's future plans is highlighted, with the expected changes to other rolling stock sets diagramed. Also there is an interesting technical article on the recent Shinkansen derailment during the Joetsu area earthquake. Kato
10-482 683 series EC 6 car set 'Thunderbird'
After many delays, finally Kato have released this low-awaited set !!! If you have one of the 681 'Thunderbird' sets, it doesn't appear to be much different, but there are many small changes and improvements. Small details, like the air conditioning units, have been changed and improved. The cars are ivory colour with a gray window band and blue stripe. The roof and underbody details are light gray. Unlike the 681 sets, the 683 3 car addon set does not have a sloped nose end car, but this means you can now add on 2 of these sets to make a 12 car train. Small roof details need to be applied, and the cars have the new body mounted coupler system. Unfortunately - still shiny silver wheels !!! The motor run is smooth and quite, and the headlights are a very bright yellow. In my opinion, the exposed coupler and swept back headlight pods make the 683 a less attractive train than the 681, but it is a good set if you are modeling the modern Kansai area. Kato 10-491 800 series TEC 6 car set 'Tsubame'
Finally Kato managed to get out their version of this train, but too late with the Tomix version being the potential best selling model of the year !!! The cars are white with red & gold stripes a dark red roof. The roof of the cab area is black. As per JR Kyushu, there is a myriad of lettering & logos all over the train, but compared to the Tomix version, this is poorly done in a lot of places - some are so fine that you cannot read them without a hi-power magnifying glass, but when you look closely they are not very clear, and even some of the larger logos look blurred !!! The single arm pantograph is very delicate - also coloured dark red. There are some insulator parts to be added to the roof of the middle two cars. The cars use the same diaphragm type coupling system already used on their other Shinkansen models. The power car is smooth and quite, and without pulling it apart, I cannot tell it has flywheels. The wheel sets are not blackened. The head/tail lights are not very bright at low voltages, especially the thin horizontal red tail lights. The headlights are an array of 3 blue/white LEDs. Conclusion - see the comparison report in this issue, but I think the Tomix model is better, even though it costs more !!!
