Some locos can also be found on the
Passenger and freight pages, as a part of train sets.
After many years absence, steam is back at Tomix! First release is the 9600 class 2-8-0 with a 3 axle tender. This was one of the most prolifically used classes in Japan, based at depots all over the country. The motor is in the tender with a drive shaft to power all loco wheels, and there is no 'ugly' motor sticking out of the cab. Kato and MicroAce steam locos have the cab inside the cab, often sticking out the back and very visible. Kato's stream locos are also 1/140 scale, which makes them look 'too big' next to other brands.
Of course, most steam locos are plain black, unless noted ...

Electric locos in Japan are split into 3 categories,
because Japan is split in half electrically! There are 1500 volts DC locos,
20000 volts AC locos, and multi-voltage locos that can use either, or are
used in the transition areas. To compound the problem, there are 50Hz AC
areas in the north and 60Hz AC areas in the south as well! Of course, diesel
locos do not have this problem. Most models have headlights and most Tomix locos
have an automatic magnetic uncoupling mechanism.

JR 193 Departmental car, which is a 2 car set.
The front car has a motor that drives the grinders, and the second car
has the motor that pushes the set along the track. The front bogie on the
first car has two axles with an abrasive surface that rotate in opposite
directions, scraping any gunk off the rails very effectively. It is so
effective that if you leave it in one place for too long, it will start
to grind the rail away!
This set is now obsolete and was replaced by the more effective and versatile
Multicleaning car, below ...
