This month the featured item is the popular Tomix 6421 Track Cleaning Car - better and more properly known as the 'multi rail cleaning car'. This is the original version with a dark blue body and yellow stripe. The car has four basic functions - it can sweep the track, do vacuuming, clean the rails with a wet solvent on a soft spinning disk, or use an abrasive disk to clean the track. It comes with the vacuum disk fitted, and has three spare wet and three dry disks, as well as the sweeper brush. The car is designed to run off the track power and needs to be pulled/pushed by a locomotive. Cleaning power can also be provided by a plug-in Tomix rail power connector, and the track power can be switched from 'normal' to 'CL' (which uses the Tomix 'Constant Lighting' circuit to provide a faster cleaning action at low movement speeds). |
Rail Fan 06/2004 A super issue this month, with the feature article being a comparison between Tokyo's Yamanote line, and the Osaka Loop line. Comprehensive maps, data tables and track diagrams are provided, as well as plenty of photos, of course. Then the Osaka Loop line is covered in detail, with each station covered in details. There are station layouts and diagrams of all the other intersecting tracks etc. The Yamanote line was covered in the same way in 04/2002. Kato 3045 EH200 EL
This is certainly an attractive model !!! It comes in one of Kato's 'long' plastic cases and the main colour of the body is a light blue, with dark blue stripes and cab ends and yellow doors (various blues with yellow doors is the 'standard' colour scheme for JR Freight DC locos). The underbody details and bogies are light gray, and the roof dark gray with silver components. This loco is a twin body using like the EH500, and has the motor in one unit and drive to all 4 bogies. Only the bogies on 1 'body' have rubber tyred wheels. A white 'JRF' and Yellow 'Blue Thunder' logos adorn the sides. There are a number of small items like antennas, whistles, GPS receivers etc to add to the roof, and grabrails to add to the front, as well as numberboards for locos 1,2,3 & 4. You can swap between the Rapido coupler and Kato's large 'hook' coupler. The motor runs smoothly and
quietly, as you would expect from a flywheel-equipped loco. I imagine it will pull quite a long train of container wagons !!! The 2 sets of headlights are quite bright, but are of the horrible 'blue' LED type :-(
It is made in Japan. Modemo NT35 Enoden 1500 series EC 2 car articulated set (Sea Breeze)
Another unit to add to the growing fleet of cars for the Enoshima Railway (Enoden) from Modemo. This colour scheme is a promotional one that is used on one selected car during the summer season, ever since 1991. During 2003, car 1501/1551 carried the distinction. One car is dark blue with white lettering 'Sea Breeze since 1902' and a white mountain? figure, and the other car is the reverse (white with dark blue lettering 'Sea Breeze since 1902' and a blue mountain? figure. The roof is light gray with dark gray details, and there are a number of small detail parts to attach. The numbers mentioned above are preprinted, so you don't have to apply any numbers - just the destination signs for either 'Fujisawa->Kamakura' or the other way. The motor runs quite smoothly and quietly, but you need to hide the motor and gearbox detail inside the body that is easily visible though the windows. I have found matt black paint on the visible components to be the easiest. Modemo's 'tram' cars unfortunately do not have head/tail lighting. The cars come with Tomix-compatible Scharfenberg couplers, however they are not self-centering, and tend to swing around loosely on the ends of the cars. It is made in China.
