There are many private railways in Japan that run a competing service with the JR company in their area.

In many cases, their tracks run parallel. For their express services, they often use the so-called 'panorama' cars,
so passengers can enjoy an uninterrupted view of the passing scenery, sometimes even from the drivers perspective.

Many private company suburban lines have through running facilities with JR suburban lines and the Subway companies as well.
